Plight of Nigerian Pilots

Image
It is quite annoying for individuals to spend millions of Naira or thousands of dollars to train to become pilots only to go back home and be struggling to looking for work. I think it is high time every pilot most especially the unemployed ones fight for what they deserve. They cannot continue to be fighting to be slaves when they can be living like kings in their own country. A Nigerian pilot invests about 12m to train and ends up competing with foreigners for jobs that should ordinarily be his. How did they get to this state? first of all the airlines argue that they are looking for experience and the Nigerians do not have it. That's on one angle. Another angle boils down to the hard reality that is tormenting the Nigerian airline industry. The Nigerian airline industry is relatively small and struggling. The average fleet size of Nigerian airlines ranges between 2 to 5 aircraft. Only Arik, Aero and Air Peace have a fleet of 26, 16 and 10 aircraft. The small fleet size of th...

PICTURE: Uyo Airport Maintenance Hanger

Image
The Maintenance Repair Overhaul (MRO) facility in Uyo Airport is nearing completion. On the request of the Akwa-Ibom State Government, the facility will be made a national hanger by the federal government. As good as the idea of a national hanger is for Nigeria, beyond the size of the facilities, the question is are there sufficient manpower to run the facilities? The NCAA has stated the need for a maintenance hanger in Lagos. Major airlines such as Arik and Aero Contractors have their own maintainance facilities. Also new hangers constructed for private and business jet owners habour a number of approved maintenance organisations.

Image
Dana Air will have to redeem its image after after loosing an airplane in a crash in June Generally, 2012 was a challenging year for the Nigeria airlines as they were financially stressed. Some of them rocked the industry on the good side, others did on the bad side. Wherever spectrum they fall into, the fact is they kept the industry on its toes and were the talking points of the industry. Dana Air: On June 3, a Dana Air McDonnell Douglass MD 83 aircraft operating as flight 992 crashed into a residential building at Iju Ishaga after both engines flamed out killing all the 153 on board as well as some others on ground. The crash led to wide spread condemnations from the general public over the use of unserviceable airplanes and negligence on the part of the airline. There were allegations questioning the airworthiness of the ill fated aircraft as it was reported that the crashed plane was involved in an incident with its previous owner, Alaska. The same airplane in 2010 was inv...
