Aviation since 1903 On 17 December 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright made a decision that forever changed the world – to fly the first powered aircraft. On that day Orville flew an aircraft created by them in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. Three more flights were made that day with Wilbur, Orville’s brother completing the record flight lasting 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet.
